QA1 Introduces Dirt Late Model Carbon Fiber Driveshafts

December 9, 2014

QA1 is proud to introduce its line of carbon fiber driveshafts for dirt late models. Available in all popular lengths with U-joints and an optional slip yoke, these driveshafts are lighter, stiffer, stronger and safer than aluminum and steel driveshafts.

QA1 is redefining industry standards by performing the filament winding in-house, in its Lakeville, Minnesota facility. “Being able to control how the carbon fiber is made is critical,” said Travis Gorsuch, QA1’s Director of Advanced Materials. “We are able to make our products specifically for each application. Instead of just cutting a premade tube to length, we are able to customize the length, wall thickness and weave pattern of our driveshafts to meet each application’s specific needs.”

These driveshafts are made using cutting-edge technology. QA1 specially winds the driveshafts with 3M™ Matrix Resin that is exclusive to QA1 performance driveshafts. 3M™ Matrix Resin uses spherical nano scale silica that provides improved abrasion resistance and longevity, higher compressive strength and minimal moisture absorption for increased torque capacity and longevity. This resin is what gives a QA1 driveshaft its distinctive blue tint.

The driveshafts have a uniform wall thickness created by optimum fiber lay up that ensures high RPM stability as well as extreme torque capacities. A thoroughly engineered surface protection is used to withstand extreme racing environments and provide worry-free performance. These driveshafts also feature high-strength alloy Spicer Life Series® Universal Joints that provide durability and high torque capacity and are sealed for maximum strength and no maintenance. The forged tube yokes are precision CNC machined and are specially developed for QA1’s 11-step bonding procedure that ensures a better balance and minimal material waste.

While there is a performance advantage to be had with a carbon fiber driveshaft, everyone should understand the increased safety associated with them, as well. Gorsuch adds, “Most of us have seen the damage that a steel or aluminum driveshaft can do to the cockpit of a racecar. In the unlikely event of a failure, a carbon fiber driveshaft shreds like a broom, so there is no damage to the racer or other parts of the car. We need to remind ourselves that although we take racing seriously and invest a lot of time and money into it, nothing is more important than our safety.”

QA1 carbon fiber driveshafts undergo rigorous testing during and after production to ensure consistent quality. They are precision balanced for smooth operation and track tested to produce the safest, highest quality driveshafts on the market.
